Guitar Summit & Signature Pickups by Andreas Kloppmann

der Guitar Summit steht kurz bevor und ich freue mich schon sehr darauf, viele von Euch dort zu treffen. Es wird am Freitag von 15:30 - 16:15 einen von DR Strings präsentierten Workshop auf der Electric Stage 1 geben und am Samstag von 15:00 - 17:00 Uhr eine Masterclass. Zwischendurch möchte ich versuchen, alle Stände zu besuchen - bei Panucci, Schwarz Custom, DR & Klotz schaue ich ganz bestimmt vorbei!  Außerdem werde ich am Freitag um 14 Uhr am Stand meiner Freunde von Kloppmann Electrics auftreten und wahrscheinlich auch häufiger dort sein, denn es gibt Schönes zu berichten: meine Signature Pickups sind fast fertig und kommen im Dezember auf den Markt!

Vor 7 Jahren, beim Soundcheck in einem kleinen Bluesclub in Bremen, hat Andreas Kloppmann ein HB 58 Set zum Test in die Les Paul von Henrik Freischlader eingebaut.  

400 Konzerte und unzählige Töne später, sind die vier inzwischen gute Freunde! 

Die Idee, gemeinsam ein Signature Pickup Set zu entwickeln, entstand sehr schnell - aber sie haben sich Zeit genommen, 3 Jahre um genau zu sein. Regelmäßige Treffen, stundenlange Gespräche über Klang, Ansprache und Dynamik. Alle Gitarren von Henrik wurden analysiert und verglichen, jede Stärke und Schwäche bestimmt. Im Rahmen dieser Zusammenarbeit, hat Henrik die 1952er Les Paul Conversion von Andreas übernommen, deren originale PAFs als Grundlage für das Humbucker Set Night & Day dienten. 

Aber bei einem Signature Set ist es nicht geblieben, am Ende sind es gleich vier geworden. 

Neben dem oldschoolig-modernen Humbucker Set, gibt es ein vielseitiges Stratocaster-Set, ein perkussiv weiches Telecaster Set und ein nahezu nebengeräuschloses P-90 Set. 

Denn was gibt es Schöneres als gemeinsam nach dem perfekten Sound zu suchen, alte Gitarren und Tonabnehmer über laute Vintage-Amps zu testen und am Ende etwas zu kreieren, das die eigenen Erwartungen erfüllt? 

„Andreas weiß einfach zu 100% was er tut und wie er einen bestimmten Sound erreichen kann. Er ist ein sehr guter Gitarrist und versteht beide Seiten – den Klang und die Physik dahinter. Das hat es für mich enorm erleichtert, ihm meine Vorstellungen zu vermitteln. Als Musiker hat man einen ganz bestimmten Sound im Kopf, aber man kann ihn nicht in Worte fassen, das ist eher ein Gefühl. Es geht um Kraft, Anschlagsdynamik, Schnelligkeit, Tonentfaltung, Sustain, Biss und eine gewisse Samtigkeit. Und das beschreibt man dann mit Worten wie nussig, karamellisiert, süßlich, holzig, transparent, dicht, glockig, hohl, kehlig, drahtig, satt, blättrig, ploppig, schneidend, usw.. Die Les Paul soll wie ein Cello klingen! Jemanden wie Andreas gefunden zu haben, der das Ganze versteht und dann auch noch umsetzen kann, ist für mich ein großes Glück!“ sagt Henrik Freischlader.

Und wirklich haben sich hier zwei Charaktere gefunden, die gemeinsam für einen guten und authentischen Sound stehen und durch jahrelange Erfahrung und Erforschung auch wissen wie man ihn erreicht. 

Diese Pickups sind etwas Besonderes und das Ergebnis einer großartigen Zusammenarbeit!

The Guitar Summit is just around the corner, and I’m really looking forward to meeting many of you there. There will be a workshop presented by DR Strings on Electric Stage 1 on Friday from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m., and a masterclass on Saturday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. In between, I’ll try to visit all the booths—but I’ll definitely be stopping by Panucci, Schwarz Custom, DR, and Klotz!  I’ll also be performing at my friends’ booth at Kloppmann Electrics on Friday at 2:00 p.m., and I’ll probably drop by there a few more times, because I have some great news: my signature pickups are almost ready and will hit the market in December!

Seven years ago, during a soundcheck at a small blues club in Bremen, Andreas Kloppmann installed an HB 58 set in Henrik Freischlader’s Les Paul for testing.

400 concerts and countless notes later, the four of them have become good friends! 

The idea of developing a signature pickup set together came about very quickly—but they took their time, three years to be exact. Regular meetings, hours-long discussions about tone, response, and dynamics. All of Henrik’s guitars were analyzed and compared, with every strength and weakness identified. As part of this collaboration, Henrik acquired Andreas’s 1952 Les Paul conversion, whose original PAFs became the basis for the Night & Day Humbucker set. 

But it didn’t stop at just one signature set—in the end, there are four. In addition to the old-school-meets-modern humbucker set, there’s a versatile Stratocaster set, a percussive yet mellow Telecaster set, and a virtually noise-free P-90 set. After all, what could be better than searching together for the perfect sound, testing vintage guitars and pickups through loud vintage amps, and ultimately creating something that lives up to your own expectations? 

“Andreas just knows 100% what he’s doing and how to achieve a specific sound. He’s a very good guitarist and understands both sides - the sound and the physics behind it. That made it so much easier for me to convey my ideas to him. As a musician, you have a very specific sound in your head, but you can’t put it into words - it’s more of a feeling. It’s about power, touch sensitivity, speed, tone development, sustain, bite, and a certain velvety quality. And you describe that with words like nutty, caramelized, sweetish, woody, transparent, dense, bell-like, hollow, throaty, wiry, rich, leafy, ploppy, cutting, etc. The Les Paul should sound like a cello! To have found someone like Andreas, who understands all of this and can actually bring it to life, is a huge stroke of luck for me!” says Henrik Freischlader.

And indeed, two individuals have come together here who are united by a commitment to creating a great, authentic sound and who, thanks to years of experience and research, know exactly how to achieve it. 

These pickups are something special and the result of a truly great collaboration!
